Beyond Words Presentation- script to read out

Slide Two
Micro Elements
Slide Three
The short film opens with the camera looking at the main characters body, it then goes up into a medium close up before quickly cutting to a medium shot of the woman looking in a mirror so we see her reflection. It has been positioned there as a way of introducing her and we find out what kind of person she is straight away as she does sign language to herself in the mirror telling the audience that she is deaf.
Slide Four
A lot of the shots are from behind the woman such as medium shots, close ups and over the shoulder shots, this is done so that the audience sees the film from her perspective.
Slide Five
Camera movements are very slow and calm matching the scenes and giving the signal that an event is building up although nothing has yet happened. A narrow depth of field if also often used blurring out the background putting all of our focus onto the main character.
Slide Six
The rule of thirds has been followed and is used quite a lot as the main character is placed slightly to the right in most of the shots, this means we can see the location around her and other characters for example the blind man.
Slide Seven
Editing has been used to make clean cuts between different sections, it also works with the sound as when the editing cuts to a new scene the sound changes with it. Also when the woman gets attacked the quick cutting of shots made the scene very dramatic and created fear.
Slide Eight
The short film is set within a gym and leads into a car park. The scene where the woman gets attacked is very dark and empty giving signals straight away that something will happen, it is also very stereotypical. Props and costumes are just parts from the modern day.
Slide Nine
The short film starts with non-diegetic sound with a buzz. As there are cuts in the editing and there is a quick flash of black the sound changes to diegetic sound which is just of people talking and noises we would be hearing if we where there. It is then obvious that we are supposed to be hearing what the main character who is deaf can hear and then cut to the actual sound happening around her, this is a very effective way of letting us into the woman’s life. There is no voiceover or narrator so we can’t get inside the woman’s head we just have to get a feeling of what it is she feels. There is a small amount of music when the woman gets attacked and this is cut between silence which creates more tension. There is a little amount of dialogue at the end, this is between the deaf and the blind woman and man. They both have disorders which affect them in different ways but this doesn’t stop them from communicating together.
Slide Ten
The script explains the whole of the short film to us and the meaning of it. It affects how the audience interprets the film as it is all explained at the end with the small amount of script between the blind man and the deaf women. I think they have chosen not to put any script till the end of the film so that we know how it must feel for this woman who hears nothing going on around her but still finds a way of communicating with people and living life like everyone else.
Slide Eleven
The font type of the title is very simple, it is white which could symbolise innocence and exactly what the main character is like. The title stays on for just five seconds but the blue background stays there for around 12 seconds which is quite a long time for just a plain blue screen. I think this is to give a dramatic and dark start to the film.

Macro Elements
Slide Thirteen
The narrative is told from the female main characters perspective, as many of the shots are from behind her so that we see what she sees and the sound matches what it is she would be hearing. This makes the audience understand what it is this character is feeling and relate themselves with her. But it is also told by the man’s perspective when there are long flashes of blue when we can’t see anything but we can hear things because this is what he’s going through.
Slide Fourteen
The short film is set in the present and we can tell this by looking at the costume and the surroundings throughout. The micro elements such as the framing of the main character and how innocent she is portrayed by the use of sound represents what deaf peoples life’s are like. All the small factors build up the character as a person so we know what she’s like. There are no stereotypes in the short film as the two main characters (the deaf women and the blind man) are shown as individuals and this is what the short film is about. The short film follows Todorov’s theory as everything is as it should be at the beginning (equilibrium), this is then disrupted by a man trying to rob the women (disequilibrium), a man then helps the woman and brings her to safety (new equilibrium). The twist on the short film is how the women is blind and the man who rescues her is deaf. The audience are asked to identify with the characters mainly through use of sound as it is this element which helps us understand the woman as when the sound cuts off and we don’t understand what’s going on this is what she is facing. And when the screen is blank but we hear things we understand what the blind man is facing.
Slide Fifteen
There is no particular target audience with this short film as it is to try and make anyone understand others around them. The film is constructed to appeal to everyone as we are put in the shoes of the main characters and can easily relate to them through this short film. The audience will respond in a very sensitive way as unless they are deaf or blind themselves it can be hard to relate yourself to a lifestyle you don’t have.

In my opinion the theme of the film is communication between people. It is trying to teach us about different lifestyles and individuals, it also makes a point about how some people can’t communicate in the same way as others e.g. the woman had to see the person’s lips who’s talking to her before she can understand.
